Let's Go on a Vintage Voyage with Inge Onsea

Inge Onsea, leading lady of Belgian fashion brand Essentiel Antwerp, is telling us all about her love for vintage fashion. Let's go on a Vintage Voyage!

In August we started our Vintage Voyage with Essentiel Antwerp and to celebrate this wonderful collaboration we interviewed Inge Onsea, founder of Essentiel Antwerp and female role model. After working as a showroom model for 12 years, she teamed up with her husband to establish Essentiel Antwerp. She started designing T-shirts out of their home in Antwerp. Soon this became a full ready-to-wear collection and ow the brand is more successful than ever, with stores in several countries. Her life motto? “Dreams don’t work unless you do”.

What is your favorite luxury indulgence?

Massages, this me-time is very important to me!

How often do you detox your wardrobe?

A lot, I have the need to clean out my wardrobe every year. It feels liberating. It is important for me to have a clear overview. I will do a big closet sale very soon, so if any of you wants to come? (laughs)

What is the one designer bag you can’t live without & why is it so special?

My vintage blue monogram printed Dior saddle bag. It was one of the first presents my husband gave me, it’s almost 15 years old. I still hold it dearly, and it happens to be completely back in fashion at the moment!

What was your first designer purchase?

An Alaïa black dress. I was a backsinger of the Dinky Toys, a Belgian popgroup. We were giving a concert in “Het Sportpaleis”, so that was the perfect occasion to buy a really sexy Alaïa dress. I bought it at a small secondhand shop in Antwerp.

Where does your love for vintage come from?

I come from a very normal family and we didn't have a lot of money to spend on clothes. My mom has always been a very fashionable woman, she went shopping weekly and I always got to join her. She loved shopping, but most of our clothes came from secondhand shops. The thrill of finding something perfect for only a fraction of the original price - I loved it!

First fashion memory?

My mother wearing a Leonard dress with a strawberry print. Vintage ofcourse. I have absolutely no idea what happend to the dress, such a pity. I would have loved to style it myself, but I guess my mom also cleans out her closet too much ;-)

How do you describe your style and did it evolve over the years?

I do not have a certain style. I like to change often. I can be tomboyish one day, rock and roll another, super sophisticated the next. Playing with fashion and changing my style is what I really love. Life is too short to stick to one style so I just really like to play around with fashion.

Which designer bag is on your wishlist?

The Hermès Constance.
